Banana Sandwich

This will sound delicious to some and cause others to stare in amazement at the thought of such a thing. I had asked my mother today what she would like for lunch. “A banana sandwich with mayonnaise, salt and pepper,” came the reply. I smiled as a memory from my childhood rushed in. I was very little the first time I saw my mother making herself a banana sandwich. “Would you like one?” she asked, “It’s good.” I declined that first offer, but in time I agreed to take a small bite. “Ummmm,” I sounded my surprised delight, “that’s not bad.” As the years passed by, I have enjoyed countless banana sandwiches. It all started with that first bite which led to a second which led to finally desiring them. Is it any differernt in our spiritual worlds?

I have met quite a few people over the years who love Jesus but who don’t eat His Word. “It’s His love letter to you,” I say with attempted encouragement. “I listen to my preacher or things on TV,” comes the freuquent reply. I like to go out to a restaurant every now and again, but I have to say, to me, it’s not as tasty as a home cooked meal. It’s the same when we leave all our spiritual food to the television to feed us. It’s good. It blesses the soul. I listen to many good teachers, such as David Jeremiah among several others. However, as good as the meal is, it’s the quiet alone moments with Jesus, reading His love letters in His sweet presence as the Holy Spirit whispers loving truth into thirsty hearts and minds, that precious intimacy is shared one on one. It’s the one on one shared meal with Gods’ own Word, and the Holy Spirit feeding, that tastes like nothing else.

Some will be convinced; others will smile and continue on with their habits of feeding hungry souls by going to a spiritual restaurant for their every meal. It’s good food, but I encourage you as my mother did me with the banana sandwich, when she said what the Holy Spirit says to each of us, Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good, (Psalm 34:8). That private meal with Him is always more delicious than any other. Taste and taste again until it becomes something you desire and crave. You will not be disappointed.
